World Cup 2026
The 2026 World Cup was held from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament featured 48 national teams and was played in 16 modern stadiums.

4:29 BST - A croaky England captain Harry Kane to BBC Sport: "It was a crazy game. We had to fight and we had to find something. I've just been singing, I can't really talk. The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.
"I thought I got to the ball first (for the penalty decision against him), it was one of those days. The ref gave a lot against us. In the end it didn't matter so I'm happy.
"Incredible, unbelievable support. Speechless.
"Jordan (Henderson) just fell over there, I think he's okay, just something to do with his arm."

He's been stretchered off with oxygen. Kane says he "should be fine".
4:22 BST - England boss Thomas Tuchel in his post-match interview: "Very proud. We needed everything. It was super difficult. In the moments we thought we catch the momentum, we had setbacks. That is proper mentality.
"This team really mean it. When the going gets tough, they never give up, they never lose belief. It was one step more.

00:04 BST - There have been some crazy thunderstorms in Mexico City - with more expected - but as things stand we're set to start on time at 1am.
00:03 BST - In case you need reminding, the Azteca is a happy place for the Mexican national side. They have only lost twice there in 89 games, and are currently on a 26-match unbeaten streak, including 19 wins and seven draws. They've never lost in 10 World Cup matches there.

23:42 BST - The team news is in for England's clash with Mexico.
Thomas Tuchel has made three changes to the starting XI that faced DR Congo – Jarell Quansah comes in at right-back, with Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon replacing Marcus Rashford, Noni Madueke, and Djed Spence.
Meanwhile, Mexico boss Javier Aguirre names an unchanged starting XI from the team that faced Ecuador.

18:57 BST - An incredible bit of breaking news as USA striker Folarin Balogun is now available to play Belgium in the last 16 after having his red card suspended by FIFA.
Balogun received a straight red card in the USA's win against Bosnia and Herzegovina last time out, but FIFA have now suspended a one-match ban for one year after review.
Reports suggest that President Donald Trump and the White House made a call to FIFA to ask Gianni Infantino to review the red card.

18:36 BST - Norway's Erling Haaland and Brazil's Gabriel won't need much acquainting pre-match given their battles for Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League.
The pair's rivalry has grown over the years thanks to both their sides' involvement in multiple title races, and it's been a great watch for the neutral.
It's always physical; Haaland once threw the ball at the back of Gabriel's head, which prompted him to later shout in his face after an Arsenal goal.
Now, they'll go head-to-head (probably literally) for their countries on the world stage.

17:42 BST - Before England vie for a quarter-final place, the earlier game looks a good one with five-time World Cup champions taking on the talented Norway.
All eyes will be on how star forwards Vinicius Junior and Erling Haaland fare, but also Haaland's individual battle with likely marker Gabriel.
Plenty of familiar faces set to be on show in New Jersey.

13:50 BST - Much has been made of England's trip to Mexico and what the Three Lions are up against at Estadio Azteca - the scene of the infamous 'Hand of God' moment 40 years ago.
Sitting more than 2,200 metres (7,220 feet) above sea level, England will have to deal with the Azteca atmosphere while facing a Mexico side with a serious record there – 70 wins, 17 draws and two losses in 89 competitive games.

12:28 BST - Morocco will be France's quarter-final opponents after they dispatched co-hosts Canada 3-0 in Houston.
The Moroccans scored three goals in the second half and are one win away from equalling their historic run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2022.

11:57 BST - Recapping yesterday's last-16 action, France – quite literally – battled past Paraguay 1-0 in searing Philadelphia to continue their march.
Kylian Mbappe's second-half penalty was the difference in an ill-tempered game that incredibly saw no Paraguay players booked despite their focus on the dark arts.
French daily L'Equipe – known for its brutal match ratings – gave referee Ilgiz Tantashev a ONE out of 10, just for reference.

Two of the world's most exciting forwards, Vinicius Junior and Erling Haaland, go head to head when Brazil face Norway in New Jersey.
