The 2026 World Cup was held from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament featured 48 national teams and was played in 16 modern stadiums.

Portugal's national anthem is played first and it's poignant, with it approaching one year since the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
23:34 BST - All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo, who incredibly has failed to score or assist in a World Cup knockout game across six editions of the tournament.
The 41-year-old has scored twice in North America, although he has come under some fire for his effectiveness during Portugal's games.
23:16 BST - How did both teams get out of the group stage then?
Portugal drew two games in Group K and thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0 in between, which got them second place behind Colombia.
Croatia were beaten 4-2 by England to open their campaign, but wins against Panama and Croatia helped them into the knockouts.

"Both teams want to win, we want to write history. Petkovic, he really raised the bar with the Swiss team. And now we want to go even further. We have a new coach now. And it is always difficult as a player to compare coaches to each other," Swiss striker Breel Embolo said.
"One thing that they have in common is that they both want to write history. If it's going to be an advantage, well, at the end of the day, it's still football."

16:42 BST - Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic has insisted that tonight's game will come down to a battle of the midfielders.
"I believe this is going to be a battle of midfielders. Portugal have excellent players in the midfield. They are tactically very good. In this match each error will be punished," Dalic said on Wednesday at a press conference in Toronto.

15:55 BST - Spain take on Austria in the first scheduled game this evening at 20:00, and Lamine Yamal is expected to be fit to play a big role.
Austria boss Ralf Rangnick was quick to praise the young talent as one of the best in the world.
"Lamine Yamal is an excellent player, and he will be for the next 12, 13 or 14 years, maybe even longer," Rangnick told reporters on Wednesday.

15:15 BST - The USA defeated Bosnia & Herzegovina last night, with Folarin Balogun getting on the scoresheet again before facing an unfortunate red card - which manager Mauricio Pochettino was not pleased with.
"Never was this a red card. Watching it on TV, never was there intention to step (on) the player," he told the post-match press conference.
"That was a normal action in football. That happened by accident and it's never intentional. That is why for me it was never a red card."
The striker also drew praise from American superstar LeBron James after another top performance.

14:50 BST - Belgium boss Rudi Garcia was delighted with his side's comeback, particularly the performance of Youri Tielemans and his composure to score the late penalty.
"What matters is that Youri Tielemans had the composure and the quality. And once again, we have the experience to take that kind of penalty, because it's not easy," said Garcia.

14:35 BST - Senegal star Pape Gueye had some strong words following their defeat, stating bluntly that he would no longer play for the national team whilst the current coaching team is in place.
"I will come back to tell you a few words regarding the elimination … but I announce today that, as long as this technical staff remains in place, I'll be taking a break from the national team," the 27-year-old posted on social media.

14:10 BST - Belgium came from behind to score two goals in the final five minutes against Senegal, taking the match to extra-time before netting the latest goal in World Cup history to book their spot in the last 16.

12:55 BST - England boss Thomas Tuchel was pleased with his side's reaction against DR Congo and the work rate on show throughout the evening.
"This team today did not accept a defeat as an outcome," the German said in a post-match press conference.
"It would be so easy to give in; it would be so easy to accept the narrative. I didn't see any of that and that is a very, very good sign."

12:10 BST - England star Harry Kane had to rescue the Three Lions in their win over DR Congo, netting twice in the dying stages of the match. The striker was pleased with his own and the team's performance.
"From an attacking point of view, it's the best performance so far. We are in the part of the tournament where we have to grind wins out," said Kane.
"I just told the boys to enjoy it. Sometimes as an England player, you don't celebrate how you should. The same as every other nation, we're through - enjoy it."
