Atlético Madrid and Barcelona lock horns in this weekend’s marquee LaLiga clash, which could have a significant impact on what is quickly becoming an intriguing title race.

Having won each of their last seven league fixtures, Atléti find themselves just two points behind Sunday’s opponents in second place.

Until Tuesday night, Diego Simeone’s men hadn’t lost in any competition since the second week in September, when they were unfortunate to be beaten by Liverpool at Anfield. Bayern Munich brought an abrupt end to that impressive run, while also becoming the first team to register a victory at the Metropolitano this term.

Los Colchoneros have kept three consecutive clean sheets on domestic duty, as they continue to boast the best defensive record in the Spanish top-flight. Jan Oblak has picked the ball out of his net on just eight occasions so far, but that figure is likely to rise following a visit from the free-scoring reigning champions.

Barcelona have registered a staggering 46 goals in the league already, racking up some huge victories in the process. The latest of which came last weekend against Alavés, who were subjected to a 6-1 thrashing at the Camp Nou.

However, Hansi Flick’s swashbuckling side no longer possesses an air of invincibility, following back-to-back defeats. After winning each of their opening 11 matches across all competitions, Barça were put to the sword by Paris Saint-Germain before succumbing to arch-rivals Real Madrid in the season’s first El Clásico.

Nevertheless, a comfortable 3-0 triumph over Aston Villa will have provided a much-needed confidence boost ahead of an intimidating trip to the capital.

This eagerly anticipated top-of-the-table contest will be televised on Premier Sports, the main home of Spanish football in the United Kingdom.

Atlético Madrid team news

Diego Simeone doesn’t have any long-term injury headaches to contend with, although a question mark remains over the condition of several first-team players.

The Argentine was short of options in midfield on Tuesday night, but this situation has improved heading into the weekend.

After developing a thigh strain during last month’s Champions League meeting with Stuttgart, Johnny Cardoso appears to be on the mend. The American international suffered an acute bout of gastroenteritis earlier on in the campaign, so he’ll be desperate to get a run of games under his belt.

Koke also struggled with a thigh problem throughout the latter stages of October, while still trying to come to terms with the tragic passing of his mother. Having made his return to action as a second-half substitute in midweek, Atléti’s long-serving captain is fit enough to face Barcelona.

Tuesday’s hosts were also without the services of the suspended Morten Hjulmand, who was shown a straight red card in his previous European outing. However, the Danish maestro is once again available for selection.

Although he’s still restricted to an individual training plan, Cristian Romero might be involved in some capacity on Sunday evening. The ex-Spurs defender hasn’t featured since picking up a muscle injury against Espanyol in mid-October, but did watch on from the bench as his teammates overcame Levante at the Estadi Ciutat de València.

Barcelona team news

With a total of four defenders now sidelined, Barcelona are looking increasingly vulnerable at the back.

Xavi Espart is the newest member of the crocked quartet, after sustaining a serious ankle injury during the recent defeat to Real Madrid. Jules Koundé is also nursing a problematic ankle, but the Frenchman won’t be out for as long as his fellow full-back.

There is still no sign of Andreas Christensen, who tore his quadriceps just before the first international break. However, it looks as if Eric García is close to recovering from a niggling thigh issue. The Spanish centre-back has been forced to wear a protective face mask throughout an injury-ravaged start to the campaign, as a result of being struck by Rodri’s flailing arm in an accidental coming together.

Faced with this long list of absentees, Hansi Flick drafted La Masia graduate Brian Fariñas into the first-team fold. Although a midfielder by trade, the 20-year-old grasped his opportunity while providing cover at right-back, with strong performance against Alavés and Aston Villa perhaps giving his manager somewhat of a selection headache.

In other injury news, midfield duo Dani Olmo and Rodri are both unavailable. Olmo was withdrawn midway through the first half of Barça’s 4-2 loss at the Parc des Princes due to feeling pain in his groin, with subsequent tests revealing a muscle tear. A pulled hamstring ensures Rodri is out of contention, but it shouldn’t be an issue that ties him to the treatment table for too long.

Keeping an in-form Raphinha fit and firing on all cylinders is of paramount importance to the 29-time LaLiga champions, as he prepares for his sixth consecutive appearance since recovering from a minor thigh complaint. The Brazilian has scored an eye-watering 15 goals this season, netting two or more in the same game on seven separate occasions.

Where to watch on TV or live stream?

Alongside Disney+ and LaLiga TV, Premier Sports is one of three networks that show Spanish top-flight action in the UK. However, as they’re able to broadcast over 340 LaLiga matches each season, Premier Sports dominates this particular market.

Only customers who have purchased a Premier Sports subscription will have access to Atlético Madrid vs. Barcelona, which is scheduled to kick off at 20:00 (GMT). The match will be televised on Premier Sports 1, while online viewers can follow events at the Metropolitano via the Premier Sports Player.

Premier Sports is also screening three of this Sunday’s other LaLiga fixtures, starting with the lunchtime meeting between Elche and Real Betis in Alicante. Attention then turns to Rayo Vallecano’s visit to Real Sociedad, before Celta Vigo welcome Levante to the Estadio Balaídos.

Head-to-Head record

Although this one is expected to be a tight encounter, recent history suggests an away victory is the most likely outcome.

Atlético Madrid have won two of their last five meetings with the Blaugrana, but lost eight of the previous ten leading up to this sequence. Furthermore, Barcelona have left the Metropolitano with maximum points in each of their most recent four league visits. Only two teams have managed to record five or more consecutive LaLiga triumphs at Atléti’s home stadium, with Bilbao (5) and cross-city neighbours Real Madrid (6) both achieving this feat.

The pair clashed on no fewer than six occasions during the 2025/26 campaign, having been drawn against one another in the Copa del Rey and Champions League knockout stages. All six of these fixtures were condensed into a five-month period, with three taking place over the course of ten days in April.

Although Barça prevailed in each of the two league encounters, Los Rojiblancos progressed to the next round of both cup competitions via narrow aggregate wins.
