Thomas Tuchel’s men produced three consecutive underwhelming performances prior to the last sixteen stage, but their heroics against co-hosts Mexico have revitalised their World Cup campaign.
A Jude Bellingham brace and a clinically taken penalty from inspirational skipper Harry Kane were enough to edge past the Mexicans, who played the majority of the second half with a one-man advantage thanks to Jarell Quansah’s dismissal for a reckless challenge on Jesús Gallardo.
Despite being willed on by a heavily partisan crowd, Mexico – on a run of just two defeats in 90 previous outings at their iconic home fortress – were unable to find a third goal as England bravely held firm during the closing stages.

Norway also faced a titanic clash in the previous round, with five-time world champions Brazil eager to prevent them from reaching the last eight of a major tournament for the first time ever. Although what occurred at MetLife Stadium was a little less dramatic than the events that unfolded in Mexico City several hours later, Norway’s victory was equally as impressive.
Just as proceedings seemed to be drifting towards extra-time, Erling Haaland inevitably made his mark. The lethal Manchester City striker netted two goals in quick succession, steering a thumping header past a sprawling Alisson Becker before lashing a powerful left-footed drive into the bottom corner.
Haaland’s third double of the summer moved him to the summit of the Golden Boot standings alongside Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, but the diminutive Argentinian has since pulled ahead thanks to his dramatic equaliser against Egypt.

Norway team news
A sickness bug has once again infiltrated the Norwegian camp, after two players were struck down by illness earlier in the tournament. Jørgen Strand Larsen missed his country’s opener against Iraq, before Marcus Holmgren Pedersen was forced to sit out last Sunday’s meeting with Brazil.
There have since been reports of several players developing coughs, but Head Coach Ståle Solbakken – who is also said to be feeling under the weather – has played down the issue.
Having sustained a thigh problem during the early stages of Norway’s thrilling 3-2 win over Senegal, Julian Ryerson returned to action against Brazil. The Borussia Dortmund full-back did receive treatment on the bench after being substituted just past the hour mark, but this was only because he felt weariness in his calves.
David Møller Wolfe also failed to complete the match in New Jersey, although his withdrawal was due to injury. The severity of Wolfe’s issue remains unclear, so there’s a doubt he’ll be available at the weekend. Either Fredrik André Bjørkan or Leo Østigård is set to take his place on the left-hand side of defence.
With an opportunity to score in a staggering fifteenth consecutive international fixture, Erling Haaland will once again lead the line. He’ll be supported in attack by Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard, who has already claimed three assists in this World Cup.

England team news
Thomas Tuchel has a couple of injury headaches to contend with, while the threat of suspension looms large over a handful of England players.
Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Nico O'Reilly, and Marc Guéhi have all picked up yellow cards during the knockout stages, which don’t wipe clear until the conclusion of Saturday’s tie. Therefore, another caution for any in that four-strong contingent would result in them missing the semi-finals should England progress.
Jordan Henderson was booked against Mexico, but the former Liverpool midfielder is unlikely to play any further part in the tournament after unluckily breaking his arm during England’s post-match celebrations at the Azteca. Following President Trump’s unprecedented intervention into Folarin Balogun’s punishment, the FA are considering whether to appeal Jarell Quansah’s automatic one-match suspension.
There’s a question mark over whether Reece James will be fit enough to feature in the quarter-final, as the Chelsea star continues his recovery from a hamstring strain. Declan Rice is still battling through the pain barrier but appears to have his back problem in check, while Marc Guéhi has experienced muscle fatigue over the past few days. However, both Rice and Guéhi are expected to start.
England predicted lineup v Norway (4-2-3-1)
Coach: Thomas Tuchel
Jordan Pickford (GK); Djed Spence, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, Nico O'Reilly; Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice; Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon; Harry Kane
Where to watch on TV or live stream?
After providing coverage of England’s first and third group stage matches, ITV has secured broadcasting rights for Saturday night’s quarter-final. Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon will once again describe the action from the commentary box, while Mark Pougatch chats to an expert panel in New York.
Online viewers can follow all of the action on ITVX, where extended match highlights will be uploaded following the referee’s full-time whistle. Those watching in Scotland can access the match via STV or the STV Player app.
Head-to-head Record
Although these two teams have clashed on 12 previous occasions, their last meeting took place almost 12 years ago. That subdued contest at Wembley was settled midway through the second half, when Wayne Rooney fired a spot-kick beyond Ørjan Nyland, the same Norwegian goalkeeper who will feature between the sticks this weekend.
England have been eliminated in the knockout stages by European opposition in four of the last five World Cups, losing out to France last time around, Croatia in 2018, Germany in 2010, and Portugal in 2006. The Three Lions didn’t progress further than the group stage at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
However, the omens also don’t look good for Ståle Solbakken’s men. Norway won only two of those 12 aforementioned encounters with their quarter-final opponents, and failed to score in each of the last four.
The Vikings have never managed to beat a European nation at a World Cup, losing four times and drawing twice in their six matches against UEFA representatives. Out of their four World Cup appearances, Norway have qualified for the knockout stages twice. Italy subsequently ousted them from the tournament on both occasions, but the similarities don’t stop there.
After beating the Scandinavians at Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome en route to becoming back-to-back world champions in 1938, Italy overcame the same opponents in the same stadium almost exactly 60 years later. What’s more, both ties came during the last sixteen stage of their respective tournaments and were decided by a single-goal margin.
With no Italians in sight, can Norway break their hoodoo and keep their World Cup dream alive?
