The 2026 World Cup was held from June 11th to July 19th in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament featured 48 national teams and was played in 16 modern stadiums.

Bafana Bafana have made one change, with Teboho Mokoena replacing Thalente Mbatha in midfield. The Canadians, meanwhile, ring the changes, as Jesse Marsch brings in Moise Bombito, Stephen Eustaquio, Tani Oluwaseyi and Liam Millar for Luc De Fougerolles, Cyle Larin, Mathieu Choiniere and Ali Ahmed.

15:10 BST - Lionel Messi scored again in Argentina's 3-1 win over Jordan last night, making it the seventh game in a row that he has found the net at a World Cup - a new record.

14:33 BST - DR Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 to book their spot in the last 32, where they will face England. Striker Yoane Wissa bagged a brace last night and reflected on his team's efforts in North America.
"We are a proud country. We are proud people. We love our country. We love our national team. We love what we represent!" Wissa told reporters.

14:00 BST - Portugal drew 0-0 with Colombia last night, and Cristiano Ronaldo drew attention again for another lacklustre showing. The striker managed just 35 touches, but manager Roberto Martinez has defended his involvement.
"Cristiano is used to being in the right place at the right time. It's more a question of mentally being strong and always being disciplined in his position," he said.
"There is no issue, physically or mentally, for Cristiano in today's game to play the 90 minutes. Maybe the next game we need to make a change, but that's like any other player."

13:45 BST - History was made in the World Cup last night as Ghana defender Derrick Luckassen found the net. He and his brother, Brian Brobbey, became the fifth sibling duo to score at a World Cup - and the first to do it for two different nations.

13:20 BST - In the other Group L match, Croatia defeated Ghana 2-1 to finish in second place. The Black Stars still qualified for the last 32 as one of the best third-placed teams, though manager Carlos Queiroz questioned the new format of the tournament.
"With so many teams qualifying for the World Cup, I think the value of the competition in terms of being rare to be in the World Cup, is, in my opinion, still debatable," he said.

13:00 BST - Speaking of Bellingham, manager Thomas Tuchel was full of praise for the young midfielder after his goal and assist.
"He is just in a sweet spot after his injury, he is just happy to play, and he feels free and he can just hopefully now also play with that intensity in a short period of time," Tuchel said of the midfielder, who turns 23 on Monday.

12:40 BST - England sealed top spot in Group L last night after beating Panama 2-0, in a match that saw Harry Kane become the Three Lions' record goalscorer in World Cups.
Teammate Jude Bellingham was full of praise, labelling him the best England player ever.
"He's the best England player of all time. He's the one who showed up more than anyone, more than any England player. And so it's quite easy to play with him."

12:00 BST - Perhaps the biggest story coming out of last night's action was the departure of Scotland manager Steve Clarke - who stepped down from his role just moments after their elimination from the World Cup was confirmed.
"The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn't have had any of the memories that we've accumulated from 2019 until now," Clarke said.
"They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their gaffer.
"Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor."
